Lena Dunham Calls Out Airline for Having Transphobic Employees
Lena Dunham was recently waiting for her delayed flight to take off when she overheard something very disturbing — two American Airlines flight attendants making transphobic comments with little awareness of the severity of their words.
The 31-year-old tweeted last night, “Not gonna call out the airline who delayed cuz sh*t happens BUT I did just overhear 2 @AmericanAir attendants having a transphobic talk. At this moment in history we should be teaching our employees about love and inclusivity @AmericanAir. That was worst part of this night.”
The airline quickly responded and asked the Girls creator to send a direct message with more information. Lena obliged, and also posted screenshots of the conversation, which contained details about what exactly happened while she was at the airport..
“I heard two female attendants walking talking about how trans kids are a trend [and] they’d never accept a trans child and transness is gross,” she told AA via DM. “I think it reflects badly on uniformed employees of your company to have that kind of dialogue going on.”
The actress further questioned, “What if a trans teen was walking behind them?”
American Airlines asked a few more logistical questions and told her that they’re, “Passing this info along to [their] team to review.”
Lena was obviously satisfied with their response and stayed quiet on the subject for the rest of the night. Earlier today, however, she reflected once more and urged her followers to always be kind and respectful, no matter what.
“For those who followed my airport saga yesterday, here’s my takeaway: these days it’s the little things. A smile. Offering a seat. Respect. We can’t afford to treat each other like cattle when we have a government that does. Being trapped at the airport filled me with love!”
We don’t always (read: quite often) agree with LD, but in this situation, she’s 100% accurate.
