9 Latina Actresses Who are the Main Character on a Nickelodeon TV Show
Disney Channel isn’t the only network to make strides when it comes to people of color — Nickelodeon is right there alongside the House of Mouse. Though there are still, probably, a great deal more white talents on DC, black actors, such as Zendaya, and Asian talents, such as the two leading ladies of Bizaardvark, are starting to stand out as more than sidekicks.
The same could most likely be said for Nick, too, but at least there are almost a couple handfuls of POC — in this case, more specifically, Latinos — that portray main characters on the network. Here are nine examples of Hispanic actresses who are Numero Uno on a Nickelodeon television series:
After stealing the show at Jamie Lynn Spears' sidekick on Zoey 101, Victoria Justice became a star on her own Nickelodeon television series, Victorious, from 2010 to 2013.
"I’m definitely very connected to being a Latina female, especially in this business," she told Latina. "My parents got divorced when I was young and my mom is 100% Puerto Rican and I have a stepdad too that I live with, but I grew up around my Puerto Rican side of the family, so I'm definitely immersed in that culture all the time. Every Friday we have rice and beans and chicken and we eat together and we laugh together, and it's honestly my favorite day of the week just because I look forward to spending time with them — and of course, the food."
"I mean even though I'm only half Puerto Rican, it's a really big part of my life," she explained to the magazine in a separate interview. "My great-grandma was born in Puerto Rico and I'm very close to her. My mom's mom, my grandma, is the most, like, Boricua [Puerto Rican] represent person ever. She's so funny, she's always asking, 'When are you going to do a duet with Prince Royce?' She loves him. She loves Marc Anthony — she's like super Boricua."
