KJ Apa Replaces Kian Lawley in The Hate U Give After Racist Video Scandal

Kian Lawley was supposed to play Starr Carter’s boyfriend, Chris, in the upcoming film adaptation of The Hate U Give, but he was fired from the movie after an old video of him using racial slurs leaked.

A rep for 20th Century Fox said in a statement at the beginning of February, “Due to the controversy surrounding his past comments and behavior, Kian Lawley will no longer appear in The Hate U Give. The studio plans to recast the role of Chris and reshoot scenes as needed.”

Fox kept true to its word of recasting Chris, despite the fact that all of Kian’s scenes were already filmed, and announced yesterday that KJ Apa will be taking over the role.

Deadline reports that the Riverdale actor just arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, for “a little over a week of re-shoots” to successfully have a new Chris integrated into the already-wrapped flick. Cast members such as Amandla Stenberg and Sabrina Carpenter are also on board to re-shoot scenes that were originally with the 22-year-old.

“Words have power and can do damage,” the YouTube star said following his firing. “I own mine and I am sorry. I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for The Hate U Give as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past. I understand the impact and I have grown and learned since then. From now on I plan to use my voice for positive change.”

Kian was also dropped by talent agency CAA.
