Kim Kardashian Slammed for Cultural Appropriation After Wearing Cornrows

The Kardashian-Jenners have (thankfully) been pretty quiet on the cultural appropriation front for a few months now, but you know those ladies simply couldn’t go too long without doing something offensive. This time, it’s Kim Kardashian West who’s being slammed for racism after she wore her hair in cornrows with beads at the ends and credited Bo Derek, a white actress who wore the same style in the 1979 movie 10, for being her inspiration.

The 37-year-old showed off her new ‘do on Snapchat over the weekend saying, “So guys, I did Bo Derek braids and I’m really into it.”

Cornrows are a “traditional African style of hair grooming” that people of color have been oppressed for wearing for decades. So not only is it problematic that Kim put her hair in braids, but also credited a white woman for inspiring her to do so.

Little sister Kylie Jenner has repeatedly worn cornrows in the past, despite getting slammed every single time. Kim also isn’t a stranger to cultural appropriation accusations, but also doesn’t seem to mind too much.
