Kim Kardashian Sparks Backlash After Dressing Up as Aaliyah for Halloween
Another day, another Kardashian controversy.
Kim Kardashian is on the receiving end of a lot of haterade on social media (as per usual), following one of her Halloween 2017 costumes:
As you can see, the 37-year-old Keeping Up with the Kardashians star went all out for the occasion, taking on three very different looks: 1. Along with her best friend, Jonathan Cheban, Kimmy recreated Sonny Bono & Cher‘s 1973 Academy Awards style. 2. On Saturday night, KK tried her hand at Madonna‘s 1991 Oscars look, while sister Kourtney Kardashian donned Michael Jackson‘s look from the same event. 3. Kim also dressed up as late R&B icon Aaliyah, inspired by the singer’s “Try Again” music video — and that’s when the backlash kicked in.
Kim took to Snapchat and Twitter to show off her chained bra, leather pants and thick choker necklace to complete her Aaliyah look, saying, “Baby Girl Aaliyah,” as the caption:

And the Internet went OFF:
Kim Kardashian did Aaliyah so dirty tryna be her for halloween…. she needs to go sit somewhere💀 pic.twitter.com/7BjrE9W1yN

You're not black. You'll never be black and you'll never be Aaliyah. Aaliyah had talent and class. Stop appropriating black culture.

Legend or not Aaliyah is a black woman and you’re not. It’s offensive and you shouldn’t push this limit, but ok… 🙄

Of anything and everything #KimKardashian could have been for Halloween, she chooses to be Aaliyah?
First of all, stop trying to be black

"I know I'm not really liked by black people but let me dress as their forever angel , Aaliyah . This gonna be a breeze.🙅🏻" -Kim Kardashian

Others were quick to point out that Kim didn’t wear blackface, so they don’t consider the costume to be cultural appropriation:
Kim Kardashian went as Aaliyah and y’all are about to drag her for no reason. Did she do blackface? No. Y’all find anything to b mad abt😕

Kimberly Kardashian West looks great dressed as Aaliyah. THAT is how you pay respect without doing Blackface. Great job @KimKardashian! ❤️🙌🏾

Sis we have real issues and actual racism to be "offended" because someone wanted to dress like a legendary pop star. Ain't even blackface

I can't believe I'm remotely defending Kim Kardashian, but I don't see a prob w/her Aaliyah outfit. She's not in blackface, so she ok.

Kim Kardashian’s Aaliyah outfit was not cultural appropriation, first of all Kim did not have blackface.

What do you think of all of it? Do you think Kim’s costume counts as cultural appropriation? Or do you think this was a fine way for her to pay tribute to one of her icons (like when kids dress up as Moana)?
