Prank Queen Zoey Deutch Convinced Kian Lawley They Were Going to Shoot Porn
We’re gonna fill you in on a little secret: we have an ongoing list of reasons why we wanna be best friends with Zoey Deutch. It’s not a physical list that we wrote out or anything, but we could recite the reasons if prompted. For starters, she’s a talented human being (as demonstrated by her multiple YA movie roles alone), she’s smart, she’s caring, plus her sense of humor is off the charts. And it’s the last reason that we mentioned — her off-the-charts sense of humor — that’s further demonstrated practically every day.
Over the weekend, we caught up with a couple members of Zoey’s latest project, Before I Fall, to find out what went down behind the scenes of the Lauren Oliver book-turned-movie (a.k.a. one of the most anticipated movies of the year). And, let us tell you, that Zoey is the ultimate prankster.
“You should ask Zoey about the prank that she pulled on Kian,” director Ry Russo-Young informed us. “There’s a prank that she and Logan [Miller] pulled on Kian [Lawley], relating to the sex scene. I don’t feel at liberty to say more about it, but if she wants to tell you, then she can!”

Zoey didn’t get a chance to explain what went down… but Kian did! “The funny thing is, on set, Zoey — we were joking back and forth, and she was saying that it was going to be… we weren’t going to be acting, to say the least,” he explains. “We weren’t going to be acting in [the sex] scene. And I was like, ‘No way! No way are we going to be doing it for real.’ And then she’s like, ‘Yeah, yeah we are.’ And, it was my first sex scene, so I was like, ‘Whoa.’ I was thrown off.”
“Then, I went to the director and was like, ‘No way, we’re doing it for real, right?’ he continues. “And she’s like, ‘No. Why would you think that?’ And, I look back at Zoey and she was laughing and they were all laughing. So, she pranked me on set saying it was going to be for real. So, that made me nervous, but once I found out that it was all in fun, I enjoyed it. Like, it was fun. I was obviously nervous, but it was cool; it was nice.”
So, the 21-year-old YouTuber believed he was going to have sexual intercourse with the 22-year-old actress… on camera. You know, like porn. WHA-?! Maybe he’s really gullible, or Zoey’s simply that believable… or both! Also, according to Kian, the sex scene was “fun,” “cool” and “nice” — a far cry from all those stars who hated their intimate on-screen moments, huh?
Of course, that’s not all we spoke about. Since Teen readers love Zoey oh so much, we also asked Kian to tell us a secret about the brunette beauty. “Well, I don’t want to be boring and say, like, ‘She’s goofy,'” he starts. “But, on set, she… it’s not like you’re working with a robot; it’s the complete opposite. Off set, she’s fun, goofy, bouncy. She’ll steal your phone and take stupid selfies; I have a selfie of her picking my nose, or something. It was something just weird, and I went through my phone later that day and saw it and thought it was really funny. You don’t really get to hang out with people or actors that are that… real. She was very outgoing and stuff, so that’s a cool thing. It’s not really a secret, but it’s a cool thing about her.”
Before I Fall hits theaters on Friday, March 3. Until then, make sure to stay tuned for more of our interviews!
Before I Fall isn’t the only book in which the lead character dies at the beginning:
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
This novel is the heartbreaking tale of a 14-year-old girl named Susie Salmon (played by Saoirse Ronan in the film adaptation), who gets raped and murdered while taking a shortcut home from school. She then watches as her friends and family cope with the death of a loved one and search for her remains. The book is even more chilling than the film, FYI, and a must-read if you haven't done so already!
