Kian Lawley Fired from The Hate U Give After Racist Video Surfaces

Kian Lawley was once known solely as a YouTube star, but is now seen as a legit Hollywood actor with projects like Before I Fall and Zac and Mia under his belt. He was supposed to star as Chris in the upcoming movie adaptation of The Hate U Give, a story about police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, but has been fired from the project after a video of him using racial slurs surfaced.

“We’re all black drinking purple Kool-aid and eating Kentucky fried mother f*cking chicken,” he could be heard saying, along with the n-word, in an old vid that was leaked at the end of January.

A rep for 20th Century Fox said in a statement, “Due to the controversy surrounding his past comments and behavior, Kian Lawley will no longer appear in The Hate U Give. The studio plans to recast the role of Chris and reshoot scenes as needed.”

The 22-year-old, who was supposed to play Amandla Stenberg’s character’s white boyfriend in the flick, released a statement of his own regarding the studio’s decision.

“Words have power and can do damage,” he said. “I own mine and I am sorry. I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for The Hate U Give as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past. I understand the impact and I have grown and learned since then. From now on I plan to use my voice for positive change.”

Kian also took to Twitter over the weekend to pen a note about growing as a person and changing for the better.

The Hate U Give finished filming in November. So far we don’t know who will be taking Kian’s place, or when he’ll be reshooting his scenes.
