Kehlani Slams Rita Ora’s New Song, “Girls,” Calling the Lyrics “Harmful”

When we found out that Rita Ora was releasing new music, we were excited. And when we found out that Cardi B, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha was featured on it, we got even more excited. The excitement ended pretty much the moment “Girls” came out because it quickly came under fire for its depiction of bisexuality.

While some people thought the song was Rita’s way of coming out as bisexual herself, but artists who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community think otherwise. Almost immediaitely after the song released, musician Hayley Kiyoko called it “downright tone-deaf” and claimed that it did “more harm than good for the LGBTQ+ community.”

Kehlani is now voicing her own concerns and went on a Twitter spree saying that there were “harmful lyrics” in the song and that it “isn’t about talent. it’s about choice.”

Rita just reponded to the song’s backlash today saying “I am sorry how I expressed myself in my song has hurt anyone” and that she has “had romantic relationships with women and men” throughout her life. We hope that this can be used as a teachable moment and that lyrics are more carefully chosen in the future.
