Backlash Ensues After Katy Perry Tricks Teen American Idol Contestant Into Kiss
Katy Perry kissed a guy and he did not like it… and neither did the people across the World Wide Web. It was a VERY uncomfortable first kiss seen around the world and the people of the Internet are not having it.
Earlier this week, American Idol aired 19-year-old Benjamin Glaze‘s audition and it was definitely not your typical American Idol audition, where a smalltown boy sings his heart out in front of three big musical stars on national television.
There was still singing involved, but the huge story that came out of this clip was the unexpected smooch that happened on camera between Katy and Benjamin. Before he started his audition, the teen shared with the judges that he had never kissed a girl before — mainly because he was saving his first kiss for someone super special. And then, as you can all guess, the big smooch happened and the contestant was SHOOK.
Okay, so there are probably some people out there who would have loved for this to have happened to them — and Benjamin totally acknowledged that in his interview with the New York Times following the situation, but still, the Internet deemed Katy’s behavior as totally inappropriate.
Hi just a friendly reminder that Katy Perry kissing this young man without his consent (he was saving his first kiss AND she tricked him into it) is a violation and assault! Joking about it is enforcing rape culture that tells us that men can’t be sexually assaulted. pic.twitter.com/CyIe64Y5eO

Imagine if a 33 year-old male artist tricked a 19 year-old female auditioner into a kiss like Katy Perry just did with that teenage guy. Would we all think it was cute? #AmericanIdol

Katy, what you did to #Benjaminglaze is not ok. Imagine if the gender roles were reversed and an older man kissed a girl on tv who said she had never been kissed. Women don’t get a free pass in the #metoo movement. #AmericanIdol should kick you off.

As the uproar against KP continued, Benjamin decided to address the issue on his own Instagram page. “Hi everyone, I would like to clear a few things up for anyone who is confused, concerned, or angry. I am not complaining about the kiss from Katy Perry at all, doing a few news reports and being interviewed by many different reporters has caused some major questions,” Benjamin wrote in a lengthy caption. “I am not complaining about the kiss, I am very honored and thankful to have been a part of American Idol… I do not think I was sexually harassed by Katy Perry and I am thankful for the judges’ comments and critiques. I was uncomfortable in a sense of how I have never been kissed before and was not expecting it. Please take into consideration that I don’t believe my views have been appropriately communicated through the media.”
But even still, the songstress’ ~joking~ actions were not well received by the world. Especially since both the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements are so prominent in the media right now.
