Jesy Nelson Slammed for Cultural Appropriation After Wearing Dreadlocks

Perrie Edwards is no stranger to being accused of cultural appropriation, having previously worn henna and a Native American headdress, and now her Little Mix bandmate Jessy Nelson is also being slammed for the same thing.

The 26-year-old singer showed off a new hairstyle on Instagram earlier this week and — you guessed it!! — it’s problematic as heck. The British crooner’s strands were styled in dreadlocks, a ‘do that’s often associated with African-American culture.

Fans are calling Jesy out for cultural appropriation because while she casually rocks the style, Black people have often been criticized and degraded for wearing their hair in locks.

Some people, on the other hand, think critics are being too harsh and the dreads do not mean Jesy is racist.

Cultural appropriation is “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture,” so we can definitely see where people are coming from when they accuse Jesy of this.
