What Jesse McCartney is Most Looking Forward to, Summed Up in One Word
When we hear the name Jesse McCartney, we’re instantly transported back to the mid-2000s. He was probably one of the biggest heartthrobs of the decade and his songs were always on the radio. We have distinct memories of “Beautiful Soul” and “Leavin'” coming on and immediately turning the volume up and singing along to every word. Add his musical talents in with the fact that he starred on Summerland and appeared as himself on some of the biggest Disney Channel shows, like Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and it’s obvious why he was everyone’s celebrity crush.
In the early 2010s, Jesse continued to make music that strayed away from his usual sound and released In Technicolor in 2014. After the release of the album, Jesse went from the recording studio to TV sets and appeared on several episodes of the Freeform comedy Young & Hungry with Emily Osment. Although we loved seeing him take on new opportunities, we have been not-so-patiently waiting for him to release new music and our prayers have finally been answered. After four long years, Jesse is ready to reintroduce himself to the world and we couldn’t be more excited.
We got to sit down and talk to Jesse about everything from his brand-new single, “Better with You,” to what he would be doing if he wasn’t a singer and — spoiler alert — our crush on him
most likely definitely reignited.
We honestly didn’t know if we would ever get new original music from Jesse ever again — and neither did he! “The catalyst for making me want to get back into the studio was a writing camp I attended in Nashville a couple years ago to write country music,” Jesse told Clevver.com exclusively. “At the time, I was just doing my own thing, I had no intention of getting back in the studio, but it was something I’ve never done before. I decided to go down and it was a huge success. I found myself getting bitten by the bug again and I started thinking, ‘Oh, maybe I should be back in the studio doing my own stuff.’ So that was kind of like the beginning of this new project.”
We don’t know about you, but we’re so happy that Jesse decided to take a trip down to Nashville because who knows if we would have ever gotten new tunes?! The first time we listened to “Better with You,” we were immediately reminded of “Beautiful Soul” because of the way the song starts, and that was actually on purpose.
“At the time, it was a very politically and socially-heated time in the world,” Jesse said. “We wanted to do something that would make people feel better and I think “Better with You” does that. It’s a feel-good song and it’s very reminiscent of the ‘Beautiful Soul’ days, it has that nostalgia factor. I think we all wanted to write a song that made us feel better, too.”
The only thing better than getting a new song is getting a new song AND a music video. The “Better with You” video is super adorable and features one of our fave actresses, Danielle Campbell, who also happens to be Louis Tomlinson‘s ex. In the video, Jesse and Danielle show the timeline of a five-year relationship and their chemistry was unreal.
“We didn’t know each other before filming,” Jesse said. “I’ve known one of her managers for a really long time and when they suggested we use Danielle for the video, I looked up her stuff and was like, ‘Wow, she’s really good and adorable.’ I knew I needed an actor for this role because it had to look real and a lot of times you get someone in a video who just hasn’t been behind a camera long enough before. It was a huge fear going into something like this, wondering what the chemistry would be like, and we just made it work and I think that only comes from people who are comfortable in front of the camera and can get the job done.”
When Jesse talks about his new music, it’s obvious that he super passionate about it and is ready to let the world hear what he has to say. In comparison to his previous music, this era is way more personal because well, he is the one who wrote the music!
“I think the biggest difference really is that I have had my hand in the writing process this time,” Jesse said. “Back then, I didn’t do a lot of songwriting. There were a lot of people holding my hand when I was 15 and I just wasn’t experienced enough. I feel like this version of me is like a tip of the hat to that time, but this time around it’s from my heart instead of somebody else’s.”
This is just the beginning for Jesse and it’s already looking like 2018 is going to be one of his best years yet. What Jesse is most looking forward to can be summed up in one word: touring.
“Touring is something that’s definitely a priority thing for me this year,” Jessie said. “Performing live is one of those things that will never get old. When people are screaming and singing your music it’s such a rush, it’s indescribable. I’m really looking forward to touring.”
Although Jesse has an incredible music career, we couldn’t help but ask what his dream job is if he wasn’t a superstar. “I would love to open up a wine and cheese shop in either Italy or France,” Jesse revealed. “Just like little corner store with fine wine and cheese and a place for people to hang out.”
Tell us when and where and we’ll be there!
