Jennifer Lawrence Fans Petition for Best Hero Nom at the MTV Movie Awards
Catching Fire scored seven nominations at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, including ones for Best Fight, Best Villain and Movie of the Year; Jennifer Lawrence herself was named four times within the list of nominees both for her stints in the sequel to The Hunger Games and American Hustle. However, her dedicated fanbase is still not satisfied, and we'd have to agree…
While we're proud that the 23-year-old Oscar-nominated actress got a good amount of recognition from the awards show, she's noticeably absent from one particular category: Best Hero. Here are the nominees: Henry Cavill as Clark Kent in Man of Steel, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in Iron Man 3, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Thor: The Dark World and Channing Tatum as John Cale in White House Down. So, actually, there are no woman at all among the potential winners. WHA-?!
Thankfully, there are thousands upon thousands of people out there who are not willing to take this disregard lying down. In a new petition, Sophie Azran states, "Don't let a strong woman like Katniss be overlooked!"
She continues, "Young women already have too few female heroes represented in film and television. We're constantly shown by the entertainment industry that men are brave, powerful, or successful, while women are often given supporting roles and weak characters."
"It's appalling to me that the event's producers are ignoring this female hero, especially since this film beat out all the others at the box office," she adds.
So far, over 15,000 people have signed the petition to get MTV to add Jennifer Lawrence's beyond heroic character to the list of nominees. Do you think Katniss deserves the recognition? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below, or on our Catching Fire message board.
