Janelle Monáe Comes Out: “I Consider Myself to Be a Free-Ass Motherf*cker”
2017 was a big year for the LGBTQ community in Hollywood. Celebrities such as Keiynan Lonsdale, Thomas Dekker and Shannon Purser came out, openly and honestly, to the world. And, from the looks of it, 2018 is shaping up to be another big year for the same community.
Demi Lovato, Joey Pollari, Kevin McHale — all of them discussed their sexuality across varying public platforms over the course of the past four months. Now, we can add Janelle Monáe to the list, courtesy of her cover spread with Rolling Stone:

In the feature, she opens up about her sexuality and discusses her new album, 'Dirty Computer.' “I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you,” she tells us. “This album is for you. Be proud.” Photograph by Matt Jones (@theonlymattjones)
The 32-year-old star is on the promo circuit for her third studio album, Dirty Computer, dropping on Friday, April 27. So, she spoke with the music-fueled publication all about her new music… but that’s not all she delved into. The Hidden Figures actress also talked about her sexuality, confirming speculation that she’s a member of the LGBTQ community. “Being a queer black woman in America,” she began, “someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherf*cker.”
Initially, she identified as bisexual, “but then later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.” That means, like Miley Cyrus & Shailene Woodley, Janelle is attracted to people regardless of their sex or gender identity.
JM is rumored to be dating Thor: Ragnorak actress Tessa Thompson, who’s apparently the singer’s love interest throughout her new album. The pair recently co-starred in Janelle’s “PYNK” music video, which was released on April 10.
