Exclusive Interview with Hunger Games Tributes Cato, Clove and Rue!

In case you didn’t notice, everyone here at is going crazy with The Hunger Games fever. Jaykay, it’s pretty obvious. So when we were offered the chance to send our trusty host Joey Graceffa to interview the cast, we jumped on it faster than you can say “mockingjay”! The first peeps he spoke to were Alexander Ludwig (Cato), Isabelle Fuhrman (Clove) and Amandla Stenberg (Rue), and if we weren’t excited enough to see these three in action, this interview makes us love them even more… Had you all read the book before the film? Were you Hunger Games fans?
Isabelle: Yeah!
Alexander: There’s a book? *laughs* Definitely, absolutely, we were all huge, huge fans of the book. Did you have favorite characters?
Isabelle: Yes definitely, my favorites were Katniss and Rue cause they’re so relatable and lovable. How was it wanting to kill them?
Isabelle: I mean I always say that you have to love your characters. So I was rereading the book to love one of the characters that’s really a bad character (Clove) and then from there discovering who she was and what made her so terrible and so mentally disturbed. And then from there just kind of doing a lot of character work. Alexander, this is quite a different role for you, compared to Race to Witch Mountain. You’re the bad guy instead of the good guy. What sort of training did you have to go through?
Alexander: Right when I got offered the role of Cato I jumped on the opportunity because like you said, I’ve never really had a chance to play a bad guy and I think that’s always something I’ve really, really wanted to do. Experience that really dark side of a person and whatnot, and Cato is a really twisted individual. We worked just unbelievably hard – physically I wanted Cato to have as big of a physical presence as a mental one in the movie. There was lots of fight training that we had to go through. I worked with a Navy Seal to bulk up. Tons of hand-to-hand combat.
Isabelle: We did a lot of work together, as far as training goes. He was sword and I was knife, so when we were doing sword training and knife training, it was kind of the same. How good did you get at knife throwing?
Isabelle: Actually I’m really good at it, which I didn’t expect at all.
Alexander: Wow, don’t be modest or anything!
Isabelle: *laughs* No, it was interesting cause there are a lot more physics involved than I expected originally, and I don’t have a good arm. So it was starting from throwing a tennis ball to gradually moving up to throwing a weighted knife at a target board. I felt I did good, I know how to still do it.
Alexander: Isabelle’s being modest, she actually did do an exceptional job and she worked very, very hard. Amandla, you spent a lot of time in some trees. Did you climb the trees, or did they put you there?
Amandla: I spent some time in both real trees and trees on the sound set. I had a custom-made harness, so I wouldn’t fall over. It was really fun actually. There was one time Jennifer [Lawrence] and I were in a tree doing a scene, and its kind of difficult to stay up… you kind of slide down gradually. So I found a little space in the tree where I could sit and wouldn’t fall down. It was like a little hole in the tree. So I was sitting and they were about to call action, and I start sliding down, so I yell out really loudly “Wait, I can’t find my butthole!” Every just kind of was like “… what?” Were there any pranks on set?
Amandla: There were indeed pranks.
Alex: You have no idea.
Isabelle: This one? (points to Amandla) Watch out.
Alex: She is a prankster. I remember one day I was doing a fight scene on set and just practicing with some of the stunt guys. In North Carolina, during the time we were filming, it was just so, so hot. It was like you just walked out of a shower of just sweat. I had my shirt off as we were doing the fight training, and I had no clothes so I had to run back to my trailer to go get my clothes, and when I did, all my clothes were gone and I couldn’t find them anywhere. I have no clothes and I’m in my boxers now, trying to find all my clothes and I find some of them in the fridge and some of them in the microwave. That was one of the many many things Amandla did to ruin my life on set. Did you guys ever try to figure out who would win the Hunger Games on-set with each other?
Isabelle: We did! We all agreed that, one of the stunt people – he was one of the tributes from District 10 – he trained all of us. Jeremy. We’d all be dead in a minute. He’d be the winner.

Not gonna lie, we’re kinda rooting for Cato, Clove and Rue a little bit now. And we wish we could have seen Amandla pranking Alexander so we could see him in his boxers! Ha! What was your fave part of the interview? Let us know in the comments!
