All the High School Musical Cast Scandals That Still Shock the Heck Out of You
At this point, we should probably give up on the casts of Disney Channel favorites. While the network feigns innocence, its stars are very much the exact opposite. All you gotta do is look at the talents from Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven and The Suite Life to know that. Need further proof? There are always the scandals surrounding the members of, arguably, the most successful Disney Channel Original Movie of all time, High School Musical:
Zac Efron — In September 2013, fans of the heartthrob got the shock of their lives when it was announced that the blue-eyed star of HSM secretly went to rehab 5 months prior… and for an even more shocking reason.
TMZ reported that the actor had a serious cocaine addiction and “the problem spiraled out of control during the filming of Neighbors.” Zac was allegedly “a no-show on a number of days… It was common knowledge he was struggling with cocaine.”
Fortunately, in the months following his visit, E! News stated that Zac’s “healthy, happy and not drinking,” adding that “he’s taking time to focus on working” instead. Phew.
Vanessa Hudgens — Baby V’s recent trouble with the law regarding a rock carving has nothing on her past scandals.
Soon after the release of the first HSM, nude photos of Gabriella Montez’s real-life counterpart hit the web, which, in the eyes of Disney, is a HUGE no-no. There was even talk of her not being in the sequel!
2 years later, in 2009, after the release of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, another batch of naked pictures hit the Internet — and they were considered forms of child pornography! That’s right, according to Vanessa’s lawyer, she was underage when the shots were taken. Yikes.
Matt Prokop — You may know him as the guy who abused Sarah Hyland for 4 out of the 5 years they were dating, but he, too, was part of the HSM cast. Matt made his first and last appearance in the franchise in HSM3 as Jimmie Zara.
When he and his former girlfriend called it quits in August 2014, the public was in utter disbelief — they looked so cute and happy together! But, as everyone should know by now, things aren’t always what they seem.
The month following the breakup, the Modern Family actress filed a restraining order against her ex-love, claiming that he choked her, pushed her and even threatened her life. Sarah claimed (via TMZ), “His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life.” Thank GOD they’re over.
Justin Martin — As for another HSM3 star, the guy who portrayed Donny Dion was arrested last year after allegedly getting into a gun fight… with the police!
TMZ reported that he was taken into custody for “unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and carrying a loaded firearm — and two counts of assault by means of a dangerous weapon.” Jeez.
Of course, Zac’s not the only Disney alum to go to rehab. Here are nine former Disney stars who went in for serious problems:
Demi has been through a lot in her life and she's very open about all of it. In 2013, she sat down with Access Hollywood and discussed her past issues with drugs and alcohol in a very revealing interview. We all fell in love with Demi when she was a HUGE Disney star acting on Sonny With a Chance and in Camp Rock, but her on-screen persona was only half of who she was at the time; the other half was an addict who was good at manipulating people and situations. She explained that she would smuggle cocaine onto airplanes and do drugs when the other first-class passengers were sleeping.
At 19 years old, Demi hit rock bottom and then decided to turn her life around by going to rehab and finally taking her recovery seriously.
"I think at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, 'Oh my God... that is alcoholic behavior. [It's] no longer, 'I'm young and rebellious and out having fun,' it was, 'Wow, I'm one of those people... I gotta get my s*** together,'" Demi explained. She went to rehab in 2010 for drugs, alcohol, cutting, bulimia and more, and is now vocal about her story so she can help empower others to love themselves and not give into the addiction.
