This High School Musical Sequel News is Equal Parts Exciting & Disappointing

By  |

It’s the start of something new… A full 10 years have passed since the first High School Musical movie was released, and nearly eight years have passed since your favorite batch of Wildcats graduated from East High in High School Musical 3: Senior Year. So one would think that the good ol’ days of HSM were long behind us… but that’s, apparently, WRONG!

Recently, Disney Channel dropped a bombshell that’s sending fans into a tizzy: High School Musical 4 is a go! According to E! News, in the fourth installment in the hit TV movie franchise, “we’ll not only meet the new Wildcats, but we’ll also get to know East High’s rivals, the West High knights!”

Disney Channel President Gary Marsh says, “High School Musical is part of Disney Channel’s DNA. It embodies all that we stand for. As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we’re excited to announce ‘the start of something new’ as we launch a search for a new class of East High Wildcats to star in a fourth installment of the High School Musical franchise.” Here’s the callout for the casting call:

So far, OG script writer Peter Barsocchini is tapped to return, and will be penning the film alongside Hannah Montana: The Movie writer Dan Berendsen. Meanwhile, Teen Beach Movie and Teen Beach 2 director Jeffrey Hornaday is tapped to direct and choreograph. Sounds like a solid team, if we do say so ourselves.

Now, for the disappointing news: As you may’ve realized, there’s been no mention of the return of the original cast members, like Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, etc. Considering their characters would be in their mid- to late-twenties (and they’re all even older than that IRL), the only way we see a return is if they come back as teachers or something. Don’t ‘bet on it,’ though, in Zac’s case — he couldn’t even make an appearance for the one-day reunion.

Like we said, equal parts exciting and disappointing.
