Grant Gustin Fires Back at Body-Shamers Who Mock New Flash Suit

By  |

Grant Gustin has been killin’ it on The CW as Barry Allen since 2013, which is probably why The Flash is about to go into its fifth season. But while the superhero series clearly has millions of fans, not everyone was thrilled when a photo of the 28-year-old in The Flash’s new season 5 costume leaked online. Many thought the updated suit, which has a smaller Flash chest emblem and no chin strap, made GG appear too skinny and not physically fit enough to be a superhero.

The body-shaming of the Glee alum got so bad that he eventually had no choice but to say something. In a statement posted to Instagram on August 8, Grant first defended the costume, which is actually “cool” and not completely finished yet.

“So here’s the thing about this bullsh*t photo leak,” he says. “It’s a cool suit. That’s a terrible photo that I was unaware was being taken, much less being posted. Some things need work and they will be worked on. We’ll get there.”

More importantly, however, the actor addressed the criticism of his body, which, to be honest, is completely uncalled for.

The statement continues, “As far as the body shaming. That’s what pisses me off. Not even just for my sake. I’ve had 20+ years of kids and adults telling me or my parents I was too thin. I’ve had my own journey of accepting it. But there’s a double standard where it’s ok to talk sh*t about a dudes body. I do my best to stay in shape and add as much size as I can throughout these seasons. I’m naturally thin, and my appetite is greatly affected by stress. Stress is something that ebbs and flows for me throughout the season. Thus, gaining weight is a challenge for me.”

Ultimately, Grant says, he is happy with his body and with The Flash’s new suit, and he thinks fans will be, too, if they wait and see the final product.
