It’s Official: Francis Lawrence Directing Both ‘Mockingjay’ Sequels
It looks like Francis Lawrence will be the man behind the camera for rest of the Hunger Games franchise. Lionsgate just confirmed that the director of Catching Fire will helm the rest of the series, which includes the third final book Mockingjay, that is being split into two parts for the big screen.
Though Gary Ross directed the first film, which was a box office smash, it was confirmed earlier this year that Francis would be taking over. However, up until now, it wasn’t clear if Francis would be taking on any other films in the series. Many thought that Gary would go on to direct Catching Fire, which is currently in production in Atlanta until the 20th of this month, then moving to Hawaii on November 26, but Gary ultimately felt like there wasn’t enough time to make the film into what he wanted it to be.
We have a feeling this means Lionsgate likes what they see so far from Francis, which is great news for the fans! Mockingjay Parts I and II are being written by Danny Strong, who just won an Emmy earlier this year for his adaptation of the Sarah Palin centered political book, Game Change. Catching Fire will hit theaters on November 22, 2013, with Mockingjay Parts I and II being released on Nov. 21, 2014, and Nov. 20, 2015, respectively.
