Not all real teen stories have a happy ending. This week, while in bond court for possession of Xanax bars, 18-year-old Penelope Soto appeared to be under the influence during the hearing; smiling, laughing, playing with her hair — the judge did not think she was taking the matter seriously. And when he asked the teenager if she’d taken any drugs in the 24 hours prior, she responded with a giggly, “Actually, no.”

However, Penelope’s humorous state was soon lost. After the judge read off the total she had to submit — $10,000 — the teen outwardly gasped and exclaimed, “Are you serious?” He responded, “I am serious, adios.” She gasped again, walked away while giving him the middle finger and cursing. Obviously, he didn’t take too well with her disrespectful comeback, and made her approach him once again.

When he asked if she, in fact, shouted an expletive at him, Penelope said she wouldn’t deny that she did. His counter: 30 days in county jail for contempt of court. Though her lawyer tried to refute, the judge’s word was final.

To see the scene for yourself, watch the video below. Now come the questions: 1. What do you think of Penelope’s state of mind throughout the hearing? 2. Do you think it was a fair sentencing prior to the flipping of the bird? 3. And how about after — sentenced to jail for cursing? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
