‘Ender’s Game’ Author Responds to LGBTQ Community’s Movie Boycott
The boycott states that “Ender’s Game author Orson Scott Card is an anti-gay activist, writer, and board member of the National Organization for Marriage.” It continues with a call to action: “Do NOT see this movie! Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand. Ignore all merchandise and toys. However much you may have admired his books, keep your money out of Orson Scott Card’s pockets.”
After OSC learned of the movement, he issued the following statement (via EW): “Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot… It will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute.”
The movie, starring Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley (as Mazer Rackham), hits theaters November 1, 2013. But what do you think of the issue at hand? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
