Ed Westwick Faces No Charges Despite Being Accused of 4 Sexual Assaults
Ed Westwick was accused of sexually assaulting and/or raping four women on four separate occasions in 2014, but he will not face any criminal charges. TMZ reports that three of the women tried to move their cases forward legally, but there is not enough evidence to charge the 31-year-old with assault.
Apparently, two of the alleged victims were able to put police in contact with potential witnesses, but “those witnesses could not provide sufficient evidence to get a conviction.” Cops were reportedly unable to get in touch with the third woman to move forward with the investigation.
The Gossip Girl alum’s lawyer issued a statement about the latest news in the case.
“The evidence was clear from the start that each of the allegations made by these three women were absolutely untrue,” Blair Berk says in the statement. “It is a shame there are those who prejudged this case and that it took over 8 months for Ed to be officially cleared of all of these charges. I hope that those who made such quick judgment here not knowing anything about the abundant evidence of innocence in this case will hesitate next time before they so publicly accuse someone who has committed no wrongdoing.”
Back in April, a source close to the Los Angeles Police Department revealed that two cases were handed over for investigation and Ed could possibly face two sexual assault charges as a result.
Prosecutors now reveal that there were additional accusers against the British actor, but all of the alleged acts were outside of the statute of limitations (“laws passed by legislative bodies in common law systems to set the maximum time after an event within which legal proceedings may be initiated”) so he cannot be punished.
