Ed Sheeran Admits to Secret Substance Abuse Battle Prior to Hiatus

No one can (or should, anyway) fault any artist for needing to take some time off. As much as we never outwardly claimed to like the idea of One Direction‘s hiatus — and it better be just a hiatus and not a full-on breakup — we understand the band’s need to take a break after years of non-stop touring as a group. So when Ed Sheeran went M.I.A. in 2016, following the success of his second studio album, x, again, we didn’t like it, but we understood ’cause he released five singles in a year’s time — that’s alot.

Little did we know, though, that 2016 was more than a simple break from Ed’s exhaustive schedule. In an interview on The Jonathan Ross Show, the 26-year-old “Perfect” singer admitted to suffering from substance abuse issues, hence, his year-long hiatus. “I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to it — and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour,” the musician said. “And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse. I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that’s why I took a year off and buggered off.”

He continued, “I focused on work, and I can’t work under the influence, I can’t write songs under the influence, I can’t perform under the influence — so the more I worked the less [that happened]. I’ve worked my whole life to get to where I am and you can’t lose that over something that you do in your spare time.”

“I didn’t really notice it was happening,” he added. “It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, ‘Calm yourself down’… It’s all fun to begin with, it all starts off as a party and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call and taking a year off.”

The British crooner credits longtime girlfriend Cherry Seaborn for helping him through this difficult time. “We live together now,” he said, “and I think that was a real help grounding me. I was a 25-year-old in the music industry on tour so I just needed someone to balance me out.”

Ed is currently on the mend after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle in London. The accident left him with a fractured right wrist and left elbow, leaving him unable to strum his guitar, thus, forcing him to cancel a bunch of his tour dates.

We wish Ed nothing but the best, and hope that he has a speedy recovery.
Prior to settling down, Ed racked up quite the dating timeline:
