How Thomas Doherty Helps Dove Cameron Battle Her Eating Disorder
Dove Cameron may look like she’s living her best life at all times, but, like everyone else, she still faces her daily struggles — and that includes battling an eating disorder and body dysmorphia.
The 22-year-old Disney Channel star first shed light on her battles in March, telling StyleCaster:
“I’ve never said this before, but I had such a bad case of anorexia. I was so badly down that hole. I was not eating for days sometimes. But it was because I thought I needed to be absolutely tiny to be loved. I genuinely thought I needed to be as skinny as I possibly could to be loved and appreciated and good enough.”
“I started to watch some people that I knew personally go so far down the not-eating hole of trying to be so skinny because that’s such a thing in Hollywood. We never want to say it, but it’s such a big thing. Girls try to be as thin as possible. Not all of them, but a lot of them.”
Dove realized that if she were to be a role model, then she needed to live like the girls that she needed when she was younger. Nevertheless, it’s not easy to give up an ED; she said that it’s “really hard to maintain health and a normality.”
“I don’t want to be dishonest. I don’t want to say, ‘I’m so happy and everything is fine.'”
Fortunately, it looks like she has a great support system in boyfriend Thomas Doherty. The Descendants actress recently took to Instagram Stories to show her fans supportive text messages from her love of one-and-a-half years:
While a few text messages may seem like such small and trivial things, they can actually be really helpful, especially to someone who feels at a loss. So, good on ya, Thomas!
