‘Divergent’ Casts Tony Goldwyn as Tris’ Father
It looks like the cast of Divergent is pretty much complete! Though there were reports swirling that The Dark Knight star Aaron Eckhardt would play Tris’ father in the upcoming film adaptation of Veronica Roth‘s YA novel, it looks like that role has gone to Tony Goldwyn.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the actor — who is currently starring as the President of the United States on ABC’s hit show Scandal — has nabbed the coveted role. (You also might recognize him as the voice of Tarzan from the animated Disney film!)
He’ll star in the film alongside his on screen wife Ashley Judd, and on screen children, who will be played by Shailene Woodley and newcomer Ansel Elgort. Tony’s character, Andrew Prior, is “a member in the city council, a group of Abnegation tasked in governing the city.”
In case you aren’t up to speed, Divergent centers on a 16-year-old girl named Tris — who will be played by Shailene — who lives in futuristic, dystopian Chicago where society is split into different factions based on human traits. All 16-year-olds take place in a ceremony where they can choose to stay in their faction, or transition to a different one, which is largely frowned upon. Tris decides to abandon her family for a new faction, but struggles with the initiation process. While fighting to stay alive, she falls for one of her instructors, named Four, who will be played by Theo James.
The film also stars Kate Winslet, Maggie Q, Zoe Kravtiz, Miles Teller, Jai Courtney, and many more. Filming for Divergent began in Chicago last week, and is expected to hits theaters on March 21, 2014.
