Disney Channel to Feature First Gay Character on Andi Mack, Season 2

Disney made strides by making Le Fou openly gay in the Beauty and the Beast live-action movie, and now Disney Channel is finally also making strides to promote equality on the small screen.

It was confirmed yesterday that DC’s Andi Mack will feature its first gay character, as 13-year-old Cyrus Goodman (played by Joshua Rush) will go on a coming-out journey starting on the season two premiere.

“Andi Mack is a story about ‘tweens’ figuring out who they are,’ said Disney Channel in a statement. “[Creator] Terri Minsky, the cast and everyone involved in the show takes great care in ensuring that it’s appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity.”

During Friday’s premiere episode, Cyrus starts realize he has romantic feelings for Jonah Beck (Asher Angel) and goes to Buffy Driscoll (Sofia Wylie) for advice. As the season continues, we will see the LGBTQ+ character continue the process of self-discovery, including figuring out how to tell his new girlfriend Iris about his identity.

The 15-year-old actor who’s playing the iconic character shared his thoughts on the new storyline on Instagram.

He wrote, “Starting conversations about trust, love, relationships and family dynamics is easier when you have a show that you can relate to. Andi Mack gives young people and their parents, mentors, and champions a meaningful way to talk about these topics and the power to decide their futures. I’m so proud to bring Cyrus’ groundbreaking storyline to life and for you to see what we’ve been working on. Tune in this Friday at 8 p.m. EST for the season premiere of season 2.”

Disney Channel almost featured a gay scene in Descendants 2, but cut it for whatever reason, so the AM storyline has been a LONG time coming and we could not be more thrilled.
