All the Crazy Camp Rock Casting Secrets You’ll Have to See to Believe

By  |

Believe it or not, it’s been almost eight years since Camp Rock first premiered on the Disney Channel. We know — when the heck did we all get so old?! But while we truly can’t even fathom that it’s been that long since we were first introduced to the magic that was Mitchie Torres and Connect 3, it’s also hard to picture a time when Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers weren’t already well-established besties (annnnd actually charging people $10K to meet them).

Like Demi’s other Disney claim to fame Sonny With A Chane, not everything with CR went as originally planned. Another young hottie as Shane Grey? DL not playing Mitchie?! Oh yeah — these Camp Rock casting secrets are so shocking you’ll want to call us out for BS. But trust us; they’re all legit!

1. Taylor Lautner auditioned for Shane Gray — Meaghan Martin, who played Tess Tyler in Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2, revealed to M! Magazine that she met the Twilight cutie while auditioning for the DCOM. The actress eventually spilled that Taylor actually got pretty far in the audition process, and was actually an “early favorite” to play the part that eventually went to Joe Jonas.

2. Chloe Bridges was almost cast as Mitchie Torres — Chloe made her Disney Channel debut as Dana Turner in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, but that wasn’t her first involvement with the DCOM world. As it turns out, the 24 year old was actually up against Demi Lovato for the female lead in the first film. “The funny thing is I actually auditioned for Camp Rock,” she told PopWrap. “I tested against Demi [Lovato] for the role of Mitchie — it came down to her and me.” Although the brunette didn’t get that role, she came back and re-auditioned for CR2 and the rest is history!

3. Demi Lovato auditioned for Camp Rock on the same day she auditioned for SWAC — If there was any questions that Demi has always been super hard working, just look at the drive she had to land a Disney role. “[In the summer of 2007], I auditioned for Camp Rock and Sonny With A Chance in the same week — actually, in the same day,” she said. The “Confident” singer obviously landed both lead roles, which is something many actresses only ever dream of doing!

4. It was an Aretha Franklin song that got Demi her role — Not all Disney Channel actresses-turned-singers can actually, well, sing, but that’s never been an issue for Demi Lovato. Instead of showing Camp Rock producers her vocal chops with a quintessential pop song, the then-14 year old went with a HUGE audition tune — Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way.” The recorded track is completely a cappella and make it quite clear why she deserved to get the lead.
