Demi Lovato has been very open about the mental health problems she’s faced for years, including being suicidal before she turned 10. She told Cosmopolitan magazine, “I was just so grateful to be on [Barney & Friends], but I was also really struggling. Even before Barney, I was suicidal. I was 7.” While encouraging someone to kill themselves is obviously never acceptable and is truly one of the most horrific things a person can do, encouraging someone who struggles with bipolar disorder and depression to take their own life is just beyond disgusting. Sadly, some (deplorable) humans still think it’s okay to do just this to the 24-year-old singer.

The brunette beauty recently got herself into trouble when she was asked about Taylor Swift‘s squad and replied, “I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. It’s kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it’s not real.” The amount of hate that came after the interview was released caused Demi to announce “a break from music and the spotlight,” but that was after the damage had been done with gut-wrenching tweets like the ones found below:

While these people spent their time encouraging a stranger to take her own life, Demi was busy doing charity work overseas and promoting mental health rehabilitation all over the world to those who desperately need it. As she said in the past, “There’s gonna be haters, but don’t let them affect you; don’t let them take away a part of you.” PREACH!

Demi Lovato never lets haters get her down — she joins the list of stars who stood up to body-shamers:
