The Real Reason for the Tears in Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold” Music Video

By  |

There’s been a lot of talk of Demi Lovato this week, and not exactly in the best light. While people praised the 23-year-old singer for boldly speaking out on behalf of Kesha and all physically & emotionally abused women, she took aim at Taylor Swift and didn’t even apologize for it, which left a bad taste in people’s mouths. So, what better time to release a new music video to give everyone something else to talk about, right?

For the former Sonny with a Chance star’s self-proclaimed “favorite song on the album and the most emotional video,” she had to really be one with her feelings. While the single lyrics portray the pain of watching an ex move on after a breakup, the real reason for Demi’s tears has nothing to do with a past love; at least during one of the times she performed it. She explained to ET, “I was actually thinking about my grandmother who wasn’t doing so well in the hospital. I kind of related it to that experience that I was going through. She’s doing a lot better now, so I’m excited, but at that moment — you know, ‘If happy is her, I’m happy for you,’ and it was just kind of like, ‘OK, if this is your time, then I’m OK with that.'”

She continued to say, “When you channel that energy and you go to that different place emotionally, it’s not easy.”

Read the emotionally charged lyrics:

Stone cold, stone cold
You see me standing, but I’m dying on the floor
Stone cold, stone cold
Maybe if I don’t cry, I won’t feel anymore

Stone cold, baby
God knows I tried to feel
Happy for you
Know that I am, even if I
Can’t understand, I’ll take the pain
Give me the truth, me and my heart
We’ll make it through
If happy is her, I’m happy for you

Hmmmm

Stone cold, stone cold
You’re dancing with her, while I’m staring at my phone
Stone cold, stone cold
I was your amber, but now she’s your shade of gold

Stone cold, baby
God knows I tried to feel
Happy for you
Know that I am, even if I
Can’t understand, I’ll take the pain
Give me the truth, me and my heart
We’ll make it through
If happy is her, I’m happy for you

Don’t wanna be stone cold, stone
I wish I could mend this but here’s my goodbye
Oh, I’m happy for you
Know that I am, even if I
Can’t understand
If happy is her, If happy is her
I’m happy for you
