Stomp Out Bullying with Teen.com and Demi Lovato with Secret’s “Mean Stinks”
Not too long ago, Demi Lovato announced that she’s the new ambassador for Secret deodorant’s “Mean Stinks” campaign, which helps struggling tweens, teens and well, everyone who’s been ridiculed fight against bullying. Since then, we at Teen.com have decided to join Secret’s effort as well with the launch of our Real Life message board, where you can share your experiences with bullying, give advice to others and even share your personal secrets.
Just to give you some background, Demi’s been super open about her own personal attempts to overcome the damage bullying caused her. She tells People, “I had a really tough time when I was in middle school. People would write ‘hate petitions’ [about me] and then send them around to be signed. They’d have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They’d come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away.”
At the official announcement of her sponsorship, Demi made an appearance at New York City’s Young Women’s Leadership School to talk to girls about the program and encourage them to #gangupforgood to end torment in schools. She also asked everyone to have a ‘Drama-Free School Year’ — all the girls had to pinky swear by wearing blue nail polish on their pinkies. Demi confirms that she’ll participate, too: “I’ll definitely be wearing [the nail polish] starting soon. It’s a conversation starter: ‘Hey, why is your pinky blue?’ ‘This is a pinky promise that I’m not going to bully people, that me and my friends are ganging up for good.’” Check out some of the promise pictures below, and make sure to join the conversation by visiting Teen.com/boards!
