Demi Lovato Admits That She Had an Eating-Disorder Relapse This Summer
Demi Lovato‘s documentary, Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, which came out earlier today, gave fans a uniquely personal look into her life and her past struggles. In addition to opening up about her past drug addiction and sexuality, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer also spoke about her longtime battle with an eating disorder, which she still struggles with every single day.
While the 25-year-old got treatment for bulimia and anorexia in 2010, she has relapsed a few times in the years that followed. One in 2014, she said, was stopped from getting out of control thanks to then-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama and another, which DL only revealed in her new doc, was actually caused because she was missing her ex.
“I relapsed with throwing up, binging and purging, a couple nights ago,” Demi could be heard telling her manager, Phil McIntyre, during a trip to Cannes, France, in June 2017.
She later continued, “What started the relapse was missing Wilmer.”
DL recognized that when she was in a relationship with the 37-year-old, she “went three years without purging,” but when they broke up in June 2016, it was “one of the first things [she] did.”
“When I feel lonely, my heart feels hungry and then I end up binging,” she explained to Phil.
Demi’s eating disorder developed when she was just 12 years old after she was severely bullied by girls in school. She thought she had to be skinny to be successful in Hollywood, and had a warped view on what her body actually looked like.
Although the former Disney Channel star still struggles, she’s doing her best to develop a healthy relationship with food and feel truly confident in her own skin.
Recovery is possible…just look at these brave celebrities who battled & overcame an eating disorder:
She admits in the February 2014 issue of Seventeen, "I started self-harming when I was a junior. I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school... I didn't know what was right and what was wrong, so I think I created this bizarre system of checks and balances to create order in my world. But it really backfired."
