Darren Criss was “Allergic” to Talking About Private Life Before Engagement
When it comes to the cast of Glee, very few members are doing better than Darren Criss. Following his stint on the hit series, he starred on Broadway (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), collaborated on music with his brother and, most recently, tackled the lead role on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
And that’s just his professional life; his personal life is looking up as well. Last month, the 31-year-old actor/singer announced his engagement to longtime girlfriend Mia Swier, saying, “Mia and I have had seven and a half years of fun, wacky, wonderful, CRAZY adventures together. And I’m happy to announce that we’re kicking those adventures up a notch. We’re goin for it. To boldly go where neither of us have gone before. Engage.”
Little did everyone know that announcing the engagement marked a HUGE step for him. In an interview with Esquire, he reveals, “It was a long time coming. We’d waited a while before we announced it. I had a whole thing written, like, ‘Usually I don’t like talking about my private life…’ which I really don’t — I was really allergic to it for a while.”
So, what changed his mind? “Eventually I got over myself and realized that it’s just the best way to let people know,” he admits.
Prior to the interview’s release, he told Us Weekly what he believes is the secret to a happy marriage. “I think for any young man preparing for marriage, it’s best to get used to saying, ‘Whatever you want want, dear,'” the Glee alum explained at Todd Snyder‘s fashion show earlier this week. “So I’m perfecting my ‘Yes, dear’s,’ and ‘Whatever you want!’ Whatever makes her happy makes me happy.”
