Teen Wolf Star Entered Rehab for Lifelong Disorder & No One Knew

It’s not easy being a celebrity. While you could make a ton of arguments to the contrary — the lavish trips, the red carpets, the money — you could also make just as many arguments to support that statement. Constantly being put under a microscope is one such con. Colton Haynes knows that all too well.

In January 2016, the 27-year-old alum of Teen Wolf & Arrow made headlines everywhere for one small comment on Tumblr. After a fan called pornandmariah said, “when I found out colton haynes had a secret gay past i got so excited even though i know it makes absolutely no difference in my life,” he responded with a short, “Was it a secret? Let’s all just enjoy life & have no regrets :)”

While it might not seem complex, it created a heck of a conversation across the web, which Colton says he wasn’t prepared for. “It was a complete shock,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I wasn’t ready to be back in the headlines. I should have made a comment or a statement, but I just wasn’t ready. I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I think in due time, everyone has to make those decisions when they’re ready, and I wasn’t yet. But I felt like I was letting people down by not coming forward with the rest of what I should have said.”

He continued, “People want you to be that GQ image that you put out, but people don’t realize what it’s like to act 24 hours a day. I’d go home and I was still acting. People who are so judgmental about those who are gay or different don’t realize that acting 24 hours a day is the most exhausting thing in the world.”

But now, he’s finally coming clean — that particular comment was not his coming-out… but his interview with EW is (in more ways than one).

Not only does the report state that the heartthrob is “in fact gay,” but the TV actor also came out about another difficult part of his life; a disorder he’s been living with as long as he can remember. “I asked to step away [from Teen Wolf & Arrow] because I cared more about my mental and physical health than my career at the time,” he explained. “I’ve had terminal anxiety my entire life. Physically ill, fainting. I’m 27 years old, and I have an ulcer. I had to step back.”

In an even bigger shock the publication states that Colton checked into rehab for his anxiety around the time of the Tumblr debacle, and, according to EW, “would be frequently back in the hospital over the next three months.”

Fortunately, Colton’s made great strides. “It took me so long to get to this point,” he said. “But I’m doing so good. I’m happier than I’ve ever been, and healthier than I’ve ever been, and that’s what I care about.”

Colton is one of at least 10 male celebrities who came out in the past year. See here:
