YouTuber Claire Wineland Dies a Week After Receiving Lung Transplant
It is with heavy hearts that we report the death of Claire Wineland, a 21-year-old girl who chronicled her battle with cystic fibrosis, “an inherited life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system,” on YouTube for the past year. Claire’s death comes just one week after she received a double lung transplant that was supposed to give her a better quality of life.
Claire’s Place, the foundation that the YouTuber started to support families living with CF, kept followers up to date on the transplant after it happened on August 26, as well as the complications that followed.
“While recovering in the ICU last night, Claire suffered a massive stroke, which is considered catastrophic following a dbl #lungtransplant. She had a blood clot that cut off blood flow to the right side of her brain and had to undergo emergency brain surgery to relieve the pressure building and save her life. The fact that they responded so quickly was quite miraculous and she survived the decompressive craniectomy but is still in an acute neuropathic situation and in a medically induced coma.”
Despite doctors’ best efforts, Claire was taken off life support and died on September 2.
“Last night at 6:00pm, Claire Wineland our inspirational founder passed away,” Wineland’s foundation, Claire’s Place, said in a statement. “She was not in any pain and the medical staff said it was the most peaceful passing they had ever witnessed. She was surrounded by love and with her mother Melissa Yeager and father John Wineland; they saw her into this world for her first breath and were with her for her last. She suffered a massive stroke on August 26th after a successful double lung transplant. The stroke was caused by a blood clot. After a week of intensive care and various life saving procedures, it became clear that it was Claire’s time to go.
Claire was an organ donor and was able to save two people’s lives after her passing.
“Her right kidney was transplanted to a 44 year old woman in San Diego, and her left kidney was transplanted to a 55 year old male in Northern California. Also, Claire’s corneas and tissue was recovered and she will be able to enhance the life of up to 50 people. Claire’s gift is huge, I want your family to know that your daughter is a hero,” her mother was told in an email, according to CNN.
Claire knew she wasn’t expected to live very long, but made a mindful effort to live every day to the fullest. She made an impact on SO many people and we will miss her greatly.
