Charles Melton Personally Apologized to Camila Mendes for Fat-Shaming Tweets

Charles Melton recently released an statement after fat-shaming tweets he sent out years ago surfaced, but his fans aren’t the only ones he felt the need to apologize to. The 27-year-old actor contacted Riverdale co-star Camila Mendes, who has been open about her battle with an eating disorder, shortly after his past words came back to haunt him and apologized to her directly.

“Charles called me personally to apologize,” the 23-year-old tells Access Hollywood. “He was devastated. He felt really sorry about it and he called me personally. You know, he said, with everything that I stand for, I’m really sorry. I know Charles, I know he’s not actually a bad person.’

She continued, “I think its a matter of sometimes you tweet things forever ago, and they’re buried in there and they come out, and it sucks and I do not agree with anything he said or support those statements. I know that’s not what he is.”

Charles’ tweets were sent between 2011 and 2012 and were beyond offensive. They said things like “Fat chicks need to understand that wearing yoga pants is a privilege, not a right” and “Don’t tease fat kids, they already have enough on their plates.”

His apology statement read, “I’m truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologize to anyone I hurt. What I posted and said was immature, offensive and inappropriate. I am ashamed of how I acted and there is no excuse for that behavior. I’m striving to do better and will use this experience to grow, helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable.”
