Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ Named Billboard’s Song of the Summer 2012

Everyone, get out of your seats and give Carly Rae Jepsen a round of applause, because her song “Call Me Maybe” was just named Billboard’s Song of the Summer. Between the covers, the mashups and, of course, the awards, it’s not surprising that Miss Jepsen finished summer off right by nabbing the title. See? We told you she had one of the best summers ever!

Carly Rae is the first person to have his/her first single recognized as the best of summer since fellow pop icon Katy Perry ran away with the honor back in 2008 for her first hit, “I Kissed a Girl.”

So, what exactly constitutes being named the biggest song of summer, you ask? Try nine weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list, 5.5 million downloads and over 1.8 radio listens. #impressive.

Although “CMM” came out on top, there were clearly tons of other summer hits that could’ve been in the running for the title. Maroon 5’s “Payphone” ranked at number two, closely followed by Goyte’s “Somebody that I Used to Know” at three and Miss Perry’s “Wide Awake” at four.

If we were Carly (one can only dream…), this win would be a prettttty big confidence boost, especially since the 2012 MTV VMAs are tonight and she’s nominated for Best New Artist! Then again, she is up against One Direction and let’s face it, we’d be slightly nervous if we were her. But, either way, she’s just happy to be nominated! She told MTV:

“Moments like that just let it really sink in. It’s crazy…Even to be listed among those names is honestly just crazy to me. I’m a big fan of all of them.”

So, do you agree with Billboard’s decision? Tell us in the poll below which song you would’ve pick for Song of the Summer!
