All it takes is one hit song or a single role in a super popular series to suddenly become a household name. For many celebs, it seems like their fame skyrockets almost overnight, and before you know it they’re being followed around almost everywhere by hoards of fans who are looking to get an autograph or snap a quick selfie.

We’ve seen it happen time and time again. Think about last year, for example, and all of the stars who seemingly rose to fame out of nowhere, like 13-year-old Millie Bobby Brown from the Netflix series Stranger Things. Prior to playing the part of Eleven on the show, Millie portrayed several different characters on shows such as Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and The Intruders, and she also made guest appearances on more popular shows like NCIS and Modern Family. However, it wasn’t until 2016 that Millie really skyrocketed to superstardom because of Stranger Things. In fact, the show was such a hit that she was even nominated for a Primetime Emmy and won a Screen Actors Guild Award! Impressive, right?

Millie wasn’t the only person to experience a MAJOR glow-up from regular person to celebrity in under a year’s time, though. Auli’i Cravahlo, who voiced the character of Moana in Disney’s Moana also encountered a sudden onslaught of fame. Before the movie, Auli’i had absolutely no experience, but after submitting an audition tape for the part of Moana, all of her dreams started falling into place. Once the movie came out, people simply couldn’t stop talking about the 16-year-old Hawaiian girl who went from being a typical high school student to a Disney Princess out of nowhere. GOALS!

So the point is, while some celebs seem to get their dream role right away, others work their whole lives for the one part that will completely change their lives. Wondering which stars broke out this year? Check out our list of 17 breakout stars of 2017:
