‘Dancing with the Stars’ Champ Calls It Quits

Fri, Nov 21, 2008

Two time Dancing with the Stars winner Julianne Hough told Ryan Seacrest on his morning show that she will not be returning next season.  “I’m not going to be back next season,” Julianne announced. “That’s final.”

Fan favorite Hough joined the show during its fourth season and took her first title with partner Apolo Anton Ohno.  She returned the next season and won again with partner Helio Castroneves.  The twenty-year old dancer was diagnosed with endometriosis this season and took time off from the competition to have an appendectomy.  She returned to be voted off with partner Cody Linely this week.

Despite the surgery, Hough acknowledges that was not the reason for her decision not to return next season.  “It’s because I really, really want to focus on the music,” Hough told Seacrest.  “(I want to) be taken seriously a little bit, and I think it’s hard to be on Dancing with the Stars and be singing and kind of get that confusion, and so I’m really going to focus on the music.”

Hough’s music career has skyrocketed with her self-titled album debuting at #1 on the Country Music Charts.  Despite her announcement to not return for the eighth season of the hit show, Hough has left the door open for a possible return down the line.  “I don’t know about the fall. Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see,” she wrote on her blog.  “I’m definitely going to focus on the music. My first album was a learning experience, and I can’t wait for the next one. I feel like the writing and producing will be even better, really awesome.”

As for her predictions for a winner this season?  “I really hope Brooke and Derek win. I think they deserve to win. From day one, they’ve been awesome. I think Brooke is the most technically sound of the celebrities and she’s a beautiful dancer.”

ABC Drops the Axe On ‘Pushing Daisies’ and Two Others

Fri, Nov 21, 2008

ABC has finally realized that quirky and original shows have no place on American television.  Pushing Daisies creator and executive producer Bryan Fuller has confirmed that ABC has given the show its walking papers.  The critical darling has struggled all season to gain back its audience lost during the writer’s strike, consistently bringing in dismal numbers week after week.

ABC will air the entire thirteen episodes that have been shot, which Fuller has said will end with a cliffhanger.  So will fans be left hanging?  “We are talking to DC Comics about doing comic books that will wrap up our storylines,” says Fuller.  And for those fans not really the comic book type?  ”I already have a pitch for a movie ready to go,” Fuller continued.

In addition to Pushing Daisies, ABC has announced they will not be ordering additional episodes for the sophmore shows Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money, which basically amounts to cancellations.  Despite a recent guest starring role by Katie “Mrs. Cruise” Holmes on Eli Stone and lots of sexual exploits on Dirty Sexy Money, both shows have failed to keep their pre-strike ratings and have continued to struggle.  It is unclear if ABC will air the remaining episodes of Eli Stone and/or Dirty Sexy Money.

Long Rumored ‘Arrested Development’ Pic Gaining Ground

Fri, Nov 21, 2008

The long rumored film version of the cult hit series Arrested Development may actually be happening.  Executive Producer and Narrator of the show Ron Howard recently said that everything is in place for the movie to happen, they were just waiting on the script to be perfect.  The show’s creator, Mitch Hurwitz, has signed on to write and direct the film for Fox Searchlight and Imagine Entertainment for a 2009 release.

E! Online reports that all of the cast members have signed on with the exception of one unnamed holdout.  Our guess is the holdout is either Jason Bateman, Michael Cera or Will Arnett - arguably the most successful of the cast.  Hopefully, they can work out deals to bring the entire cast back together, as I can’t imagine Arrested Development without the entire crazy, dysfunctional family in tact.

For those of you unfamiliar with the show, it ran on FOX for three seasons from 2003-2006.  Despite overwhelming critical praise and a rabid fan base, the show was never able to bring in big enough ratings to warrant the costs of such a great (and expensive) ensemble cast.  The show has done well on DVD and continues to be viewed as one of the greatest shows of the past twenty years.  Many fans believe the story of the Bluth family deserves to continue to be told and we finally may get our chance on the big screen.

Which Mountain? Witch Mountain!

Wed, Nov 19, 2008

Disney has once again dug through their never-ending treasure trove of assets to revamp what they hope will be their next big film franchise.  Even with “mountain” in its title, Witch Mountain never got its own theme park ride alongside Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain or Splash Mountain.  It did however, make many children of the 70’s wish they had telekinetic powers.

For those of you not around during the decade of disco, Race to Witch Mountain is a retelling of the Disney classic Escape to Witch Mountain.  That film and its sequel, Return From Witch Mountain told the story to two orphaned children, Tina and Tony, who turn out to be extraterrestrials with magical powers who are on the run from the government.  Race to Witch Mountain appears to follow the same plot as its predecessor with updated special effects and a lot more action.  Throw in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and it looks like a new generation of kids will be trying to move things with their minds come next spring.

Are You Ready For 2012?

Wed, Nov 19, 2008

It may be over four years away, but many people believe the year 2012 will be the end of days for humanity.  Specifically, the end will happen on December 21, 2012.  What is so significant about this date?  Well, many theorists point to the Mayan calendar in which that day is the completion of the thirteenth baktun cycle (which is basically 400 tropical years).  I’m not sure why the end of the 13th baktun means the end of the world, and some more glass half-full theorists believe this will be a period of spirirtual enlightning rather than the end of days.  Hollywood, knowing full well that the latter theory tends to sell more tickets, decided to make a movie about what we may be looking forward to.  If global warming and the fall of our economy hasn’t been enough to scare the crap out of you lately, take a look at the latest from Independence Day director Roland Emmerich.

New Star Trek Trailer Released

Wed, Nov 19, 2008

Paramount released the new trailer for Star Trek from Director J.J. Abrams and it looks awsome. Ok, I may be nerding out here, but watch this Star Trek trailer and tell me it doesn’t look good. Not sure what the plot is from this trailer and in fact, that is what I like about it. It almost doesn’t give anything away. Kind of like J.J. Abrams last movie…Cloverfield. You almost had no idea what the storyline was walking into theater so you couldn’t complain that “they showed all the good parts in the trailer.”

New Disney Pixar Movie - UP Teaser Trailer Released

Mon, Nov 17, 2008

Those guys at Disney Pixar are so good at what they do, they can make you like just about anything from a car to a toy to a robot that doesn’t speak called Wall-E.   They seem to have done it again with this new movie UP.  I haven’t ever heard of it but just from this little teaser trailer, you can tell it is going to be great. They just released the UP Teaser Trailer this week.

What is the premise you ask??  Ask and you shall receive.  Here are the details:

Directed by: Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc) and Bob Peterson. From the Academy Award-nominated team of director Pete Docter (”Monsters, Inc.”) and co-director Bob Peterson comes “UP,” a comedic adventure taking off (and lifting spirits) in summer 2009. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. “UP” takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer — look “UP.”

OK, this premise sounds a bit out there but I am willing to give Disney and Pixar the benefit of the doubt cause they are so good at what they do.

New clip from Transporter 3 - Wharehouse Fight

Mon, Nov 17, 2008

Everyone of the Transporter movies seem to come up with new and better ways to stage a fight and Transporter 3 is no exception. Check out this clip starring Jason Statham as he fights off a whole crew of bad guys.

This fight just goes to show you that a nice suit can be a deadly weapon.  But I think my favorite part is the end with the car on the lift.  Even though Jason Statham plays a badass in every movie he is in, I think they could keep on making Transporter movies forever and I would see everyone of them.
