17 Again, Zac Efron’s first foray into moviestardom (no, High School Musical 3 didn’t count — he’s on his own this time) opened today. Also out today? A fair number of good reviews for 17 Again, which might be surprising.
By Rotten Tomatoes‘ count, 17 Again has gotten 66% positive reviews — 53 good and 27 bad. Efron himself is also getting good reviews — Roger Ebert said the acting was “a little better than I expected,” the New York Daily News says Efron easily “carries the movie,” and Salon.com says the movie is entertaining thanks to Efron (who “certainly knows how to be cute”).
The question is, how many boys are willingly go to the theater to see this. And the answer? Probably the same amount that went to Mean Girls, which turned into a surprise hit (directly before Lindsay Lohan self-destructed).
