Did anybody besides tweens and their parents even know Hannah Montana: The Movie was coming out? Turns out it didn’t matter to those targeted-advertising geniuses at Disney, because the movie took in $34 million at the box office, comfortably landing at #1.
Worried over the recent flop of the Jonas Brothers concert film, Disney conservatively estimated the flick would open with around $18 million. Turns out the concern was unfounded — the big opening instead underlines the hefty popularity difference between Hannah and the Brothers.
Observe and Report opened soft with a not-bad-but-not-good $11.1 million. (Seth Rogen’s overexposure hopefully won’t hurt the summer release of Funny People, Judd Apatow’s next movie, which looks really good.) Dragonball Evolution opened in eighth place with a weak $4.7 million, but the film was designed from the start to play better abroad.
Fast & Furious fell 59% from its massive opening weekend to $28.8 million. A huge drop was expected, so the fact that it stayed below 60% can be considered good news in this case.
Every other movie in the top ten capitalized on the Easter weekend — in which kids and many adults had the day off on Friday — to post lower declines than normal. Nothing besides Fast & Furious dropped by more than 40%. That includes Monsters vs. Aliens, which has now made $140 million and counting, and chart partners Knowing and I Love You, Man, which have so far made $68 and $59 million, respectively.
