Wow. It’s now confirmed that Sean Penn is set to play Larry in the Farrelly Brothers’ upcoming The Three Stooges movie. Jim Carrey is officially in negotiations to play Curly, and Benicio Del Toro is the “rumored possibility” for Moe.
What a cast.
The film is not a biopic but instead, according to the Hollywood Reporter, a “fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges’ gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu.” Originally set to be four separate vignettes in the tradition of old Three Stooges shorts, it’s now been streamlined into one narrative.
I’m trying to picture Sean Penn slapstick, and I just can’t.
The film will be made for MGM, which is looking to start production in the Fall in order to make a 2010 release.
