Originally, Ridley Scott was supposed to direct a movie called Nottingham, a twist on the classic Robin Hood story told from a sympathetic Sheriff of Nottingham’s point of view. Russell Crowe, a longtime Scott collaborator, was set to star as the Sheriff.
As more details leaked out, it was revealed that the story would be a love triangle between the Sheriff, Robin Hood, and Maid Marian. Sienna Miller was to play Marian, while rumors abounded that Christian Bale or British actor Sam Riley would play Robin Hood.
Then things took a strange turn when it was revealed that Scott had the idea to cast Crowe as both the Sheriff and Robin Hood.
No one quite knew what to make of that or how it would work, but Scott had confirmed it…at least, until last week, when he told MTV that he had changed his mind, the movie will now be called Robin Hood, Crowe will star as Robin Hood, and the Sheriff is no longer a major character.
In other words, it’s now a completely different movie. Crowe as the Sheriff of Nottingham was inspired casting, and the “Sheriff as protagonist” twist sounded cool. Now it seems to be a generic Robin Hood movie with a Robin Hood who’s too old. But shooting starts in two months and Crowe has apparently been practicing his archery, so this is the movie we’re going to get.
