Friday the 13th landed a massive $42 million opening this weekend at the box office, marking the best opening for a pure horror movie…like, ever.
The larger story, though, is that nearly everything continues to do spectacularly. Since many people have today off for President’s Day, Sunday played like another Saturday, but even taking that into consideration, grosses were unusually robust:
-Confessions of a Shopaholic opened to a strong $15.4 million.
-He’s Just Not That Into You dropped only 29% from last weekend to $20 million. An eventual $100 million gross is looking more and more likely.
-Most surprisingly, Taken fell by only 6% to $19 million and now has grossed $78 million. Look for a final gross upwards of $120 million — and just to remind you, this was supposed to be a fairly obscure action movie starring the guy from Schindler’s List and that girl who died on Lost.
The only semi-disappointment this weekend came from the soft opening of The International, which starred Clive Owen and Naomi Watts but only grossed an estimated $10 million. Overall, the top ten was 40% higher than last year’s President’s Day weekend.
