Luckily for Hollywood, the movie business is one industry that doesn’t seem too affected by the current economic catastrophe: this past January was the biggest on record, and February isn’t slowing down.
That might be because compared to other entertainment options — sporting events, shopping sprees, even a dinner out — going to the movies is still a pretty cheap date.
The star-studded He’s Just Not That Into You hit #1 this weekend, as expected, with $27 million. At #2 was Taken, which dropped by a tiny 18% from last weekend to grab $20 million.
Dakota Fanning’s two movies both debuted in considerably fewer theaters — about 2,300 versus He’s Just Not That Into You’s 3,200 — but still scored solid debuts: Coraline landed in third place with $16 million, while Push showed up in sixth place with $10.2 million.
The only wide-release disappointment of the weekend was Pink Panther 2. While its predecessor debuted with $20 million at this time two years ago, the sequel was down heavily to $12 million. Given an international-themed plot and cast members ranging from England to India, the film might do better overseas.
In limited release, the much-delayed Fanboys grossed only $164,000 from 44 theaters.
