Martin Scorsese aims to cast Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro in his next movie, Silence, a 17th Century-set drama about a pair of Jesuit priests who face persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and spread the gospels.
Gael Garcia Bernal (Babel) is also in talks to join the cast.
Variety notes that Scorsese, who just finished the Dennis Lehane adaptation Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, has been eying the project — an adaptation of a novel by Shusaku Endo — for over a decade.
Day-Lewis just finished playing the lead in Rob Marshall’s musical Nine, while Del Toro has Che currently in theaters and is also starring in The Wolf Man, out in November.
