This baffles me, beyond all sense and logic. Apparently, someone got the bright idea into their head to allow Anne Hathaway to play Judy Garland in the upcoming stage AND screen versions of Get Happy, a biopic about Garland’s life.
One, I’m baffled that there would even be such a thing. Does anyone actually give a strong fart in a stiff wind about Judy Garland? Sufficiently so to drop cash on seeing it? I can’t imagine the market that would be interested in Judy Garland biopic, and if there’s one thing I know, in Hollywood, all success is determined by market strength. If they’ll watch it, it’ll get made. The only question that remains, of course, is will they watch it?
Two, and perhaps more importantly, assuming you’ve got the market forces arrayed behind a Judy Garland biopic, why on EARTH would you put Anne Hathaway in the slot? Seriously! This doesn’t make SENSE! She’s frankly not that much of a singer–we saw (rather heard) that much clearly enough when she tried it at the Oscars. Oh, sure, she’s passable, but do you want “passable” on Judy Garland? Just plain old doesn’t make sense.
I spend a lot of time baffled by Hollywood, folks, so I guess it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that we’re baffled right now.
