Cruise News Part Two–The Benjamin Buttonhook

Mon, Feb 2, 2009

Celebrity Gossip

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has been making the Oscar rounds already, getting nominated for thirteen Oscars and winning several other awards and nominations.  But here’s the REALLY interesting part–The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was apparently alive and well as far back as 1992…and instead of Brad Pitt…it was supposed to be Tom Cruise.

I know!  I’m amazed too!  And it gets BETTER!  Check out Cruise’s vaguely prophetic interview with Movieline back in 1992:

“That was a heartbreaking, very complex script and Steven was concerned, structurally, about how to do it. I’m developing a project now where I would be aged to about 55, and Nic is looking at this picture where she’d have to age to 70. Stuff like that is tough because it’s about prosthetics and that’s really out of the actor’s hands. Look at the technology in Death Becomes Her and you realize it’s going to get weird over the next 20 years because you’re going to be able to take an image of the President, theoretically, and have him do just about anything.”

And indeed, not TEN years later, we had Forrest Gump shaking hands with President Kennedy.  And President Nixon. And President Johnson, too.  Hard to believe that Tom Cruise actually saw it coming…harder still to believe it took much less time than even he projected.
