He also wins the pretentiousness award for only adding the “von” to his name after going to film school.

This looks like his first real genre film, and I’m pretty sure the trailer reveals the ending, but with this guy you never know.  See for yourself:

Starring the terrific Sam Rockwell, Moon is a terrific sci-fi movie about a man nearing the end of his three-year mission harvesting a fusion energy source on the moon.  But then something happens, and he discovers something, and I can’t really say any more except that fans of tight, well-done sci-fi that subverts genre cliches will love this.

The minimalist poster just came out, and underneath it you can check out the trailer, which reveals slightly more than I just did but mostly does an admirable job of not giving away the whole movie.

Hey Fox, let’s officially release these three TV spots ASAP, okay?

The second of three 60-second previews for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, called “Brothers”, debuted last night on Fox and this time focused on Wolverine’s relationship with Sabertooth (Liev Schreiber) and his time in the army.  We also get glimpses of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Lynn Collins as Silver Fox.

They took the first preview down from YouTube and are rapidly taking down all copies of the second, but you can follow the breadcrumbs here or here.

If you’d rather just watch tonight’s third preview on TV and not hunt around for it the next day, it’ll be shown at some point during American Idol.

Or you could just watch them on the Internet the next day, like you’re doing right now.  This first video, called “Outcasts”, focuses on Wolverine’s childhood.  I always liked not knowing his history — I thought that was kind of the point of his character — but the movie seems to be taking its origin story straight from the Marvel comics canon, so it gets points for that.  Check it out:

500 Days of Summer is a new romantic comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel…except, according to the trailer (embedded below), it’s not.  Instead, it’s a weird movie that involves comedy, drama, passion, sing-alongs with animated birds, and the above picture.  Good weird or bad weird?  Decide for yourself…

The move was done after Sony decided they had a particularly strong summer slate (including Angels & Demons, the Jack Black/Michael Cera comedy The Year One, and the Denzel Washington/John Travolta thriller remake The Taking of Pelham 123) and wanted to stick a tentpole in the pre-Thanksgiving spot usually reserved for James Bond movies.  It’ll now have to go up against Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes and Dwayne Johnson in Tooth Fairy.

You know…for a company that’s taken as much abuse lately as Disney has, I’m kind of surprised to see them pump out some good movies. The newest of which involves a recently-released trailer for Race to Witch Mountain, based on the low-grade films of the seventies of the same name.

Featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Annasophia Robb, Race to Witch Mountain involves a couple kids who might be aliens on the run from an intergalatic bounty hunter with a raftload of onboard weaponry who must get back to their ship which happens to be somewhere near Witch Mountain.

Okay, so there are some problems with it.  So the bounty hunter’s weaponry is apparently categorized by a charging whine before firing, which is probably a massive design flaw.  Can you see this actually being part of a design meeting somewhere?  “Hey, Zorgo…let’s make sure we warn everybody before this thing fires!” “What should we use, Margulak?  A siren?” “Naaah, we used that on the photon torpedoes.  Let’s just have it emit a whining noise while it initializes.” “Works for me. Let’s go get lunch!”

So there’s some other rather dicey sequences involved, like the kid / maybe aliens are talking to dogs and whatnot, but still, this looks like it might be a pretty decent movie.

Sure, we’re all a bit spoiled by out-of-nowhere surprise hit Pirates of the Caribbean, but we all remember The Haunted Mansion.  It’s strange to say but the evidence really seems to be bearing it out–Disney’s strength is no longer in cartoons.  Pixar pretty much destroyed any chance of Disney ever looking good in animation EVER AGAIN, but Disney can still clock out the occasional good live-action title.  The entire Pirates trilogy (possibly going on to full franchise) was too good to miss.

And if Race to Witch Mountain can hold it together, well, Disney may have just found its new millenium business model.  And only ten years in too…all riiiiight.

A teaser for next year’s Astro Boy has been released.  Based on the popular manga series and television program created by Osamu Tezuka which first appeared in 1952.  The CGI film is set to hit theaters October 23rd and features the voices of Nicolas Cage, Scarlett Johansson, Donald Sutherland, Bill Nighy, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy, Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell and Matt Lucas.

The film follows a brillaint scientist who creates a robotic boy in the image of the son he lost.  The robotic boy must use his incredible powers to save Metro City from destruction while trying to find acceptance in the human world.
