EXCLUSIVE: 10 Things You Need to Know About The Maze Runner‘s Blake Cooper
There’s less than one week until The Maze Runner hits theaters — ONE WEEK. But, since there’s still a little more time left, you should get to know The Next Big Thing, who just so happens to be one of the film’s stars, Blake Cooper (a.k.a. Chuck)?
The young actor’s got quite a story to tell what with his impressive casting in the James Dashner-written book turned Wes Ball-directed film. (HINT: It involves social media.) Plus he’s got an amazing brotherly relationship with his on-screen bestie, Dylan O’Brien, and a connection to The Fault in Our Stars. To learn all about it, click through our gallery of Blake here:
Congratulations on The Maze Runner! Can you tell us a bit about how you got the part? We hear it's a great story.
Yes. The story of how I got the role of Chuck began with a Facebook message that I received from a girl named Olivia. Olivia had met me at some point in a local class and she had remembered me. Olivia felt the need (thank goodness) to message me on FB and told me that her favorite book was being made into a movie and it was called The Maze Runner. She insisted that I check into it because, in her mind, I was the perfect Chuck! My mom and I decided to read the book and, after doing so, we felt the same way about Chuck. So, my mom asked my agent to try to get me an audition. We didn't realize that it was a big deal and that every kid that fit the role in LA was trying to get the part!
When our agent had no luck getting me an audition, I took to Twitter and found @wesball (the director) and sent him a tweet. Some of the fans noticed and began to fan-cast me by tweeting Wes as well. In the end, Wes took notice and gave me a last-minute opportunity to do a taped audition (from Atlanta where I live.) The rest was history because, from what I heard on set, the moment that the team saw my tape, they knew that I was Chuck.
While on set, I had the entire cast sign and write personal notes to Olivia in my original copy of The Maze Runner. When we wrapped and I returned home to Atlanta, my mom and I met up with Olivia and her mom to present this special copy to Olivia to show our appreciation. It was a great moment because it meant the world to her and she burst into tears.
