8 Black Actors Who are the Main Character on a Disney Channel TV Show
It’s officially Black History Month! To celebrate, we’re taking a look at some of the best Disney Channel shows over the years that cast an African-American actor as the main character; not the sidekick or some background character, the lead. Let’s be honest, there were so many great ones to choose from, especially some long-forgotten classics from way back when. Disney has always made an effort to create shows that inspire diversity and different viewpoints on its network, and some of our favorite childhood shows were ones that cast a black person in the leading role.
Disney knows how to cast a show that is not only open to showing different viewpoints and ways of life, but shows that were also just downright hilarious. From The Proud Family to That’s So Raven, it’s good to honor some of the amazing actors and actresses who opened doors for the future, and the ones who are currently killing it on Disney Channel to this day:
Zendaya has been the lead on not one, but two shows on Disney Channel over the course of her career. We were first introduced to her on Shake It Up! in 2010, on which she starred alongside Bella Thorne. Since 2015, she's played the title character on the series K.C. Undercover. Both roles allowed her to showcase her star power, and gave Disney a much-needed chance to make the network more diverse once again.
