Bella Hadid’s “Proud to Be Muslim” Quote Sparks Islamophobic Backlash

The Hadid girls can never win. A month ago, after Gigi Hadid was featured as the first-ever cover girl for Vogue Arabia, the 21-year-old supermodel was criticized for only speaking about her Palestinian background when it benefits her. Now, Gigi’s little sister, Bella Hadid, is on the receiving end of her own backlash after she revealed her religious background.

While gracing the cover of PORTER‘s Summer Issue, the 20-year-old supermodel admitted that her father, Mohamed Hadid, who’s a refugee, is a practicing Muslim. “He was always religious, and he always prayed with us,” she explained, before adding that she, too, is a member of the faith. “I am proud to be a Muslim.”
